chapter 9

By the second Friday of rehearsals, I’m really good at losing my golden ball. I almost cry every time. And I haven’t called the wishing well a garbage can in three days.

“One week to your big day, and you’re almost ready,” James says. “Let’s move on to the scene in the castle. Okay, princess. You’ve made this deal with the frog, and you really, really regret it. You can’t stand the frog. Let’s see it.”

I sit down in the chair where I’m supposed to be having my royal dinner and stare at the stuffed frog next to me. I try to look like I can’t stand him, but he’s very cute and froggy in a silly, ugly sort of way.

“Marty, try again.” Mrs. Aloi rushes in and scoops up the frog. “This is a horrible, slimy, disgusting creature. You have to look disgusted.”

I try again. Mostly I just feel bad for it, though.

James takes the frog from her and squats down next to me. “Here’s the thing,” he says. “You’re looking at this frog like Marty would look at it, right?”

I nod.

“And I’m going to guess that Marty really likes frogs?”

I nod again.

James gives me the big white smile. “I like frogs, too,” he says. “Did you know some frogs can jump up to twenty times the length of their bodies? That would be like me jumping more than a hundred feet!”

It’s my turn to smile. “Yep, and did you know the longest frog jump ever was made by a frog named Santjie in South Africa?”

Annie steps up and tugs my sleeve. “Hey — yeah! We read about him at the frog exhibit at the Museum of Natural History. The frog went almost thirty-three and a half feet in just three jumps!”

It was really awesome.
